Primarily correspondence of the related Quaker families of Collins, Cresson, Emlen, Morris, Wistar and Wood, also diaries, photographs, genealogy, financial, legal and business papers, clippings, maps, facsimiles and other papers. Includes: correspondence of Annabella Elliott Cresson (1743-1793) and husband Caleb Cresson (1742-1816); letters (1815-1816) of Caleb Cresson (1775-1821) while in England and France and transcript of journal of his visit; papers of Charles Caleb Cresson (1816-1902) include research notes and notebooks (topics include Pierre Cresson, William Penn Charter School and John Archdale, also his genealogical research on Bacon, Cresson, Elliott, Emlen, Warder and related families), letterbook (1893-1895) and his "Our Saviour as a Wine Drinker"; transcript of journal (1784-1785) of trip to Barbados by James Cresson (1741-1799); memoirs (ca. 1764) of Joshua Cresson (1744-1793); approx. 240 letters (1876-1878) of Joshua H. The William Penn Charter School, an independent college preparatory school, had its beginnings in the Public Grammar School founded in 1689 as a result of instructions from William Penn to the Provincial Council of Pennsylvania. Thomas Lloyd, president of the Council, requested Philadelphia Monthly Meeting to take charge of the matter.
